Brenden's Story
Brenden Sanborn is a contemporary fine artist working primarily in watercolor, ink, and mixed media. With more than twenty years dedicated to the human figure, his work examines the body as both form and emotion. Through careful observation and expressive mark making, he explores intimacy, masculinity, vulnerability, and presence.
Originally exhibiting in New England and now based in South Florida, Brenden continues to evolve his practice while remaining rooted in figurative tradition.
At the core of Brenden’s work is a commitment to honesty. Each painting begins as a study of gesture and color but grows into something more personal. The figure becomes a vehicle for connection, identity, and narrative.
Whether creating male figure studies, portraits, or abstract compositions, his intention remains the same. To create work that feels direct, thoughtful, and quietly powerful.
Career Highlights

2003
First Solo Exhibition
In 2003, Brenden Sanborn presented his first solo art show. The venue was a nightclub rather than a traditional gallery, but that only made the milestone more meaningful. Determined to create his own opportunity, he approached venues directly and organized the exhibition himself.
The show marked the beginning of his public career. It was the first time an entire space was filled with his work, introducing audiences to his bold exploration of the male figure.

2004
Second Solo Exhibition
The success of his first solo show led directly to a second exhibition in 2004. Continuing to work in oil, Brenden expanded the scale and confidence of his paintings, deepening his exploration of the male figure.
This show marked an important moment of validation. What began as a self initiated opportunity quickly evolved into a growing presence, reinforcing his commitment to building a career centered around figurative work.

2007
A Turning Point in Watercolor
In 2006, Brenden made his first serious commitment to watercolor. Although he had experimented with the medium before, this was the first time he recognized its potential as more than a study tool.
This painting marked a shift in direction. The fluidity, transparency, and unpredictability of watercolor opened a new way of working, one that would eventually become central to his practice and define much of his future work.

2015
Live Painting at Art Basel Miami
In 2015, Brenden painted live during Art Basel Miami, bringing his process directly into the public eye. Working in real time before a crowded audience, the experience amplified the immediacy and confidence of his practice.
The night marked a powerful moment of visibility, placing his work within one of the most internationally recognized art events in the world.

2020
Nude Nite Miami
In 2020, Brenden exhibited in Nude Nite Miami, the only time the nationally recognized event was held in Miami rather than its long standing home in Orlando. The exhibition brought his figurative work into a larger curated setting dedicated entirely to the nude form.
The show reinforced his continued commitment to exploring the male figure while placing his work among a broader community of contemporary artists focused on the human body.

2026
Unspoken Solo Exhibition at Space Untitled Gallery
In 2026, Brenden presented Unspoken at Space Untitled Gallery, marking a defining moment in his career. The exhibition brought together years of exploration of the male figure and emotional presence into a focused body of work.
The show reflected a refinement of voice and vision, standing as one of the most significant milestones in his ongoing evolution as a contemporary figurative artist.

The Unscripted Collection
Unscripted emerged from a moment when I stopped overworking the figure and began trusting the paint. Instead of forcing structure, I allowed movement, gravity, and intuition to shape the work. The result was a series of paintings that feel immediate, honest, and alive.
What began as an experiment became one of my most collected and personally meaningful bodies of work. This collection represents a shift toward freedom in my process and a deeper trust in instinct.
